The New York Times reported today that the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery acquired the original stencil and wheatpaste Obama piece Shepard Fairey debuted at the Manifest Hope DNC show. Martin E. Sullivan, the director of the National Portrait Gallery, said that Fairey’s Obama poster was “an emblem of a significant election, as well as a new presidency.” The piece is expected to be on display during the inauguration, no word on whether or not it sold for the original asking price of $75K.

Good going Shep, you've made history and now your art will be seen by all future generations. Hold onto those signed and unsigned art pieces, they should have just doubled or tripled in price.

We've heard conflicting stories as to which piece it is that sold, however, the Art Report is heading to DC soon, expect to see some pictures in the coming weeks!
